So, I had the poll running on our blog about the baby name. It was between Roman, Lincoln, and Boston. The poll voted for Lincoln by far... but now that name is out of the running. Now, we are thinking about Boston, Brody, and Bode. Here is the deal, Boston and Brody we both love. Bode, (pronounced Bodee, like the skier Bode Miller) we also love, but the spelling is an issue. I feel like if you spell it B-o-d-e, then it looks like it rhymes with mode, and thats how people will want to pronounce it. I think B-o-d-i-e or B-o-d-e-e look like girl names. So, the bottom line is this... if we go with that name, will he always be correcting the way people pronounce his name so it doesn't rhyme with mode? How would you want to say his name if you saw it written as Bode? If you don't like that spelling but you like the name, how would you spell it?
Now, we are not deciding on a name until we meet him, so there are no gurauntees, but I want your opinion on the spelling of the name Bode, so we can either keep it in the running, or throw it out and leave it between Boston and Brody. Hurry and help me out. He could come any day now!

I read Bode as if it rhymed with mode, so I agree that people would always be mis pronouncing his name. I had a student my first year of teaching named Bodee and I dont think that it looks like a girls name. But I think I like Brody better between the two. And Randy likes Brody the best too.
When you first mentioned the name Bode I thought it was kind of weird but it has really grown on me and I think it's my favorite of the three. It's unique but sounds really masculine. I would spell it Bode. I still think the other spellings look a little like girls names. You/he will have to correct people sometimes but so what? I have to do that all the time with Alex. People either think she's a boy or they think her name is Alice. Or that her name is Alexandra. It bothered me a little bit when she was first born but I don't care anymore. If that's the name you like best don't let that stuff bother you. Just pick the name you like the best.
P.S. when we were leaving church with the Gunns last week I heard a woman calling her little boy (about 3 years old) Bode and I thought it was really cute. I've never known/met anyone with that name before.
1st choice: Bode
2nd Choice: John
3rd Choice: Paul
4th Choice: Randy
5th Choice: Larry
I agree with Tiffany that I would see Bode and say it like Mode. I think it's one thing to correct people once in a while but I think it would get pretty frustrating for a kid (or an adult) to have to correct people every time. I think Bodee sounds so masculine that I don't think spelling it with a double ee seems feminine at all - if that's what you like. I like Brody the best - but I think Bodee could grow on me. Funny how you change your mind. I used to like Boston the best - I think at one point you told me that's what you were going with. Whatever you choose will just become him :)
My only regret was giving you a name that every year 3 other girls in your classroom would have as well - remember the Michele R Michele B etc. At least you have no risk of that issue no matter which one you choose.
As I was laying in bed last night thinking about this name thing for Bode, I thought, "If she likes Bode but thinks Bodie and Bodee look like girl names, why doesn't she just spell it with a Y, like Brody without the R?" And I really thought I had a good idea...for about 2 seconds and then I realized his name would be Body and then you'd STILL be correcting how everyone pronounced it, lol. I say Brody or Bodee, with two e's. I've seen boys spell it like that and I agree with mom that it is a very masculine name.
Sounds like we’ve just narrowed it down to the kajillion different ways we can spell Bode instead of the three names you are actually considering. Shel, Boston is a sweet name. That’s my vote. I’m not really feeling Bode/Bodie/Bodee/Body and I think Brody is one of those far too “mormon” names. Boston is legit. I bet the day he’s born you’ll look at him and know that that’s the best name for him, with out a doubt! So Boston is my final answer!
I'm changing my mind.....
Go with Larry
Hi Michele...so I was just looking at your family blog and that I'd comment :) We have a friend named Bowdy..you may remember him. He was friends with Cameron and those guys.
Anyway that's how he spells it
Bowdy.
:)
Can't wait to hear what you guys decide!
Paul says Bode, spelled just like that
Michele,
When I read your name choices I liked all 3 names, and when you see his cute little face you will know what fits him. We had 3 names for Nicole and when we saw her we just knew it was Nicole. When I read Bode on your blog I knew how to pronounce it but I'm from a whole different generation. Any of the 3 spellings will work and so what if you have to correct some people (I have had to do that all my life). You will know when you see him!
p.s. Just please dont use "Body" Tiff is doin to much thinking in bed when she should be sleeping:)
Hi,
I'm 8 mos pregnant and Bode is the only name that my man and I can agree on. Oddly, he never liked Brody (one of my favourites) because he's not keen on trendy, fad names, or too popular names. But suddenly we came across Bo and liked that. We were looking for a longer version so Bo could be a choice for a nickname. Then my man said what about Bode like the skier. I didn't know the skier but googled him an he looks a fair bit like our possible son anyway. We would say "Bo-dee." Surprisingly, I like the way it looks like "mode" on paper since it's not so cutesie for resumees etc. Yes, I usually shy away from the cute names because they may not fit an older man in a career. There is still the option of Bo too. Mind you Bode is so adorable that might just stick.
So obviously, my vote is for Bode for you too!
